The rain had minimal impact on the atmosphere at Ferencvaros Stadion, where the home team began energetically against their Premier League opponents, who had opted to rest several key players, including James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, and Micky van de Ven. In just 16 minutes, they appeared to have scored when Barnabass Varga executed a diagonal header that found the back of the net, seemingly a poacher’s effort against goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. However, after a protracted VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to Varga’s knee being ruled offside.

Following this significant reprieve, Tottenham Hotspur managed to score in the 23rd minute, almost unexpectedly, as Sarr converted from close range after the Ferencvaros defense failed to clear the ball effectively. This goal lifted the spirits of the visiting team, who began to exhibit greater control and confidence in their attacking play. They were nearly awarded a penalty when Matheus Saldanha tripped Pedro Porro, but VAR ultimately overturned the decision.

The referee was compelled to pause the match briefly in the second half as Ferencvaros supporters ignited flares, filling the stadium with dense smoke. Upon resuming play, Spurs regained their dominance, and Werner squandered a prime opportunity to extend their lead, missing a one-on-one chance, much to the frustration of manager Ange Postecoglou.

In his quest for a second goal, the Australian manager brought on Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Johnson, a decision that proved fruitful. With just four minutes remaining, Moore set up Johnson at the edge of the penalty area, and the forward skillfully took a touch to his left before curling a precise shot that struck the bottom of the post and entered the goal. Despite conceding a late goal, the home side maintained their resolve and managed to score through Varga, though it ultimately served only as a consolation.
