EERC Transfers Operating License

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has granted an operating license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), authorizing it to distribute electricity throughout Enugu State.

In a ceremony held today in Enugu, which commemorated the conclusion of the transition period for the transfer of regulatory authority from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the EERC, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo, Chairman and CEO of EERC, formally presented the interim distribution license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited.

During the presentation, Okonkwo urged Mainpower to maintain its commitment to delivering electricity services to the residents of Enugu State and to collaborate with the Commission to ensure the continued growth of efficient, reliable, sustainable, and accountable electricity services in the long term.

As a result of this development, EEDC’s operations in Enugu State have officially concluded and have been handed over to Mainpower, with NERC ceasing to regulate the electricity sector within the state.

Following the receipt of the license, Mr. Kester Enwereonu, a member of Mainpower’s Board of Directors, remarked that this successful transition marks a new era that embodies progressive reforms in the power sector, and he expressed Mainpower’s readiness to take a leadership role.

He further emphasized that to expedite this transformation, Mainpower will implement re-engineered processes, advanced technology, and innovative tools aimed at overcoming traditional obstacles, highlighting that technology is central to the company’s strategic approach. He assured stakeholders that Mainpower will utilize data-driven insights to boost efficiency and enhance service delivery, with a focus on developing a future-ready distribution network capable of providing sustainable, reliable, and uninterrupted power to households and businesses throughout the state. This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a brighter future.
