Numerous fatalities are feared in a community in Anambra.
A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Nibo, a community located in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where an unspecified number of individuals were shot by assailants.
A video circulating on social media depicts the assailants attacking Oye Nwochichi market near the old maternity facility in Nibo during the afternoon, where they opened fire on the victims.
Reports indicate that the gunmen arrived in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep. Following their initial assault, they fled to Eke Nibo Market, where they discharged their firearms once more, leading to additional casualties.
While an official death toll has not yet been established, a local source has reported the recovery of at least 10 bodies thus far.
In light of the incident, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the attack in a press statement, indicating that it was linked to a confrontation between rival cult factions. He further noted that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of extra personnel to the area and has encouraged witnesses to come forward with any relevant information.
“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash that occurred on 20/10/2024 in Nibo, Awka South LG. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has mandated the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action.
“Preliminary reports are still emerging, and we urge witnesses of this incident to share any information that may help identify the perpetrators for possible arrest.
