President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, the nation’s second highest national honour, to Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

During his speech on the 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1, President Tinubu had previously conferred the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) upon both the Speaker and the Deputy Senate President.

This action sparked a discussion within the House of Representatives on Wednesday, urging the President to elevate the Speaker’s honour to a higher status.

In response to the House of Representatives’ appeal, President Tinubu has chosen to rectify what was perceived as a historical oversight.

Consequently, he has decided to promote the Speaker from CFR to GCON, in alignment with the National Order of Precedence.

The Speaker, along with the Senate President, other key officials of the National Assembly, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, will receive their new honours in a formal ceremony at a later date.
